Design of structures in the arctic

By Prof.ir.Kees Willemse MBA

The arctic region contains as much as 30 % of the world’s oil & gas reserves and hence many developments are taking place to exploit these reserves. However, the arctic environment is both unique and very challenging, calling for a new approach and for new techniques to create sustainable solutions.
The lecture will give a brief overview of the main arctic features and the considerations when designing offshore structures. Subsequently it will be illustrated with the design of the Shtockman field, which is situated in the Barents Sea, where very harsh conditions can occur. Finally the TUD initiative to develop an “Arctic Engineering Centre of Excellence” will be presented.
