Petroleum Activities in the High North
|
Espen Andreas Hauge, adviser of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, Norway
The High North is an emerging petroleum province. Norway is responsible for managing large ocean areas in the Arctic. The Norwegian Government’s strategy for the High North is based on the principles of activity, presence and knowledge to secure a sustainable development. To achieve this, increased activity and good resource management are prerequisites. Petroleum activities can be a pillar for social and economic development in the High North. These perspectives create great possibilities for Norway, but also challenges. The Norwegian Government has addressed this task of sustainable development through integrated management plans for the sea areas.
